Good question. I looked up the difference in my handy-dandy synonym guide.

A summary is "any attempt to condense into as few words as possible an extended train of thought.... The word implies a pithy paraphrase.... Also, the word almost exclusively refers to something that follows after and is based on the extended presentation, or even concludes it.

"Abstract and precis both refer to summaries written most often by someone else than the original author.... Precis may suggest a lengthier treatment than an abstract and one in which the exact ordering of points in the original is adhered to.... The word can even refer to a skeletal list-like presentation of whole fields of knowledge."

Ok, now this is really reaching back in my memories. I vaguely recall writing these (precis, that is...what's the plural by the way???) in elementary school, I think. A precis is shorter and more to the point than a summary, if I recall right. Which I may not!! Ok, I just went on the web and it said: a precis is a concise summary of an article, text, or book.
