Massive escalation of the Vietnam war; Printing fiat money to pay for it, thus starting the stagflation that Jimmy Carter had to (or didn't) deal with. Had the idea that social problems could be cured by throwing good money at badly-designed programs. I don't remember much of an environmentalism mentality during his administration. Environmentalism was just getting popular by then. I will give him credit for the 1965 Civil Right Bill, though. Otherwise, a bad President.

Sadly, it was Vietnam. However he didn't start the war, nor did any other American President before or after his administration. Were it not for the commuist threat, there would be no war there in the first place, and he wouldn't be as concerned.

President Johnson didn't give African Americans their civil rights, they were born with them. Implying that man can give civil rights also implies that man can take them away. We are all born with certain rights given to us by our creator. What Johnson did was was force the Government to recognize those rights.
I wasn't alive for his administration so the only things I know about him are from what I have read and learned from the history and military channel.

Vietnam, it destroyed his reputation.
The war began after the Gulf of Tonkin incident, where a North Vietnamese boat supposadly attacked a US destoryer. However it is in question whether or not that attack was staged.

I think his presidency was defined by the 50000 plus that died in viet nam due to his greed.
