It all depends on what you want to do and how far you want to go. If you are doing dance for fun and don't care about being a top contender regionally, nationally, or globally, you mostly are spending money on shoes and lessons. However, if you want to make it a career or start doing it competitively, you are looking at least a few thousand dollars annually to start with and then will be moving up to five figures as you progress.

As someone who does ballroom dance, private lessons usually start at $50/hr and be a few hundred an hour with champion dancers. The shoes cost anywhere from $100 and up. If you ever want to compete at a sactioned competition, there is at least another few hundred up front for the entrance free, hotel room, and food. Plus, the costumes you wear are very expensive. Men can usually get away with tailored suits costing around $1k while the women have gowns that can cost as much as a car but the median price is around $2k-$5k.

Ballet, modern, jazz, tap, etc have the cost of lessons, leotards, shoes, and the immense amount of time you have to dedicate to it. It can take a huge toll on your body if you don't maintain a high level of healthiness or if you try to push yourself too hard and too fast.

You can spend as much or as little as you want.

If you want to be your best, you can't expect to learn it all for free. However, there are natural limitations, like there is only 24 hours in a day and you have human muscles that develop overtime not overnight. Meaning, if you keep throwing more money at it the result will be the same at this moment. If you are a beginner dancer - a good qualified teacher can teach you all you need to know now for $60-$80 per hour. Hiring a world-top pro for $250 an hour won't change much for you at this moment.

But the costs are:
- lessons (from $8 and up, depending on style, depending on number of students in class)
- floor fee for practice (if applicabe, depends on the studio, $5 per hour and up) or studio memebership fees
- shoes (depends on style, from $20 to $300 )
- dance clothes for practice (from $20 per piece)
- hair products and makeup
- competition fees (if applicabe, from $15 and up)
- travel fees
- performance/competition outfits (if applicable, prices vary greatly depending on a dance style and on the proficiency level and age of a dancer)

It can vary widely. It depends upon the dance style and the requirements of the class or studio.

There are the class / studio fees, practice / rehearsal outfits, performance costumes, and any other special equipment that may be required.
