If you mean American football, I would have to say that it was either Walter Payton or Jim Brown.
Currently the best football player hands down is Ladanian Tomlinson - well on his way to becoming an icon and the face of what the NFL should be about.

well i think pele but it is hard to judge the players from then to now days because the game has changed and some eople believe that individual players are the best but i think that the best players are team players and the ones who set up the goals not necesarily score them
