ever have pictures next to most of the food? I think restaurants should put even a little thumbnail pictures next to the menu item. Is there some reason why they don't?

I think I miss out on a lot of opportunities to try new things because looking at food does a lot more for someone than reading about it. Even if the frosted the picture and put it in the back of the description. That way of there were inperfections with the photography you wouldn't see it, but the diner could get the general look of it.

A lot do! Denny's does. Other similar type restaurants do show pictures. Nicer restaurants don't because it would make the menu look cheap and nicer restaurants change the menu sometimes daily. It also give some mystic to the food, like a present.
Hope this helps.

A half decent shot of a plate of food takes hours of styling and fiddling with lights, etc. The better restaurants will have menus that are constantly changing. So it wouldn't be feasible. And that doesn't even take into consideration the cost in time and money of printing up new menus.
Chain restaurants have well-established menus (not to mention economy of scale) so they can provide shots of their food products. And, you'll have noticed how, more often than not, what you get is only distantly related to the photo.
A lot of menus in better establishments do include a listing of the meal's ingredients. If you're feeling adventurous and want to try something new, choose a dish with a couple of ingredients you enjoy. I've rarely been disappointed making my choices this way.

Those pictures are done by food stylists, in order to have the plate always look just so. They have a number of productions tricks to help them to do this, and what it adds up to is that the plate that you get won't look that much like the illustration. Think of how disappointed you might be with that result, despite the quality of the food.
That's called a good way to lose business.

The reason I could think of is a space contraints or that they would have to dress up that many more perfect plates for the picture (takes a long time). But a picture does say 1 million words, I think i would be a good idea.

Pictures are expensive to print and often don't look good in the menu.

One reason is the cost. The more color printing the more expensive the job.
