I am in Anaheim, California. There will be supposedly city-wide wireless offered by Earthlink. But someone told me DSL has less problem.

I don't live in Anaheim ... or CA for that matter. But in actuality the two are different things.

DSL will be a connection that you have to pay for. It runs through your phone lines into your home. The phone line then plugs into a DSL modem and is output from the modem by a CAT5 cable either directly to your laptop or into a wireless router (which you have to buy).

A city provided wireless connection may be ok, but I am sure there are several factors you have to take into consideration. You would need to know how far you are from the nearest access point to determine if you'll get good signal strength and then you have to think of the whole big brother thing too (not that your actions aren't recorded using DSL, but connecting directly through a goverment provided service isn't appealing to me).

I'm not sure if you have to pay for the city-wide wireless, but to me it would be worth it to be in control of my own connection. If you have multiple computers, you won't be able to network them using the city wireless either.

If you are going for speed, you'll get a quicker connection on cable, if that's provided in your area.

It's difficult to get wireless from home in many cases. Even cellular wireless is a problem sometimes. Of course if your lucky, you might live in downtown and be next door to a strong signal. However there's a new kind of paid wireless multimedia service coming in some cities called "WiMax". It's sort of the commercial version of the WiFi you may have on your laptop that is offered for free in some coffee shops, airports and hotels etc. The best service is Fiber cable to the door, or hybrid fiber coax cable. DSL would probably be next if available and WiMax will be close competition but probably more expensive. Satellite internet would be my last choice if I was somewhere in rural America where nothing else was available.

True dsl has less problems but if the wireless internet is boradband speed. i would go with wirless cause its faster lot more easyer. dsl u have to connect to the phone line wich is a drag. also if u get an N Card what i ve herd you ll have almost no problems at all. a g card is good too i have one it works fine. but dont get an A OR B card they suck they have lots problem and disconncet sometimes if snigal is not high. but g or an N would(if your going for mobile wireless internet its much faster then dsl in from some providers) be fine. here link to help u decide http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=1006051023273

Wireless technology available today for Fixed-Wireless configs (like the Anaheim area rollout) will most likely suffer from capacity delays as subscribers use it. By that I mean the total throughput for a wireless cell is a finite number, and once it catches on, the capacity for that CELL will be 'tested'. You will likely see download delays during peak usage times.

DSL on the other hand has the same types of capacity issues, but they can add bandwith ANYTIME they like since it simply is adding more backhaul trunking to the central offices. Pretty commonplace now.

Adding hard wired capacity is well understood. Adding more CELLs (reducing the subscriber population per CELL) is a strange black-magic today and will probably take awhile to sort out.

Your mileage WILL vary, but this gives you some idea what to expect.

It depends what the situation is.
Wireless is good and provides handyness but with DSL you always know that their should be a good connection, even with the wires.
