My opinion is because the holidays are "supposed" to be such a wonderful time of year, when you spend time with the people you love the most. This normally includes family and friends. For many people, they have just been hurting for far too long without saying anything, and don't want to fake their way through another set of holidays with someone they don't love anymore. This will allow them to really spend time with the ones they want to spend time with, without having to have their holidays ruined by a facade. They liberate themselves, and finally let people know how they really feel.

I don't know about "most", but I think what happens is the Holidays is something that most people have firm ideas of how they want it to be in their family life, and if they feel the partner they have is not it, they dump and go for a new one they think will be the Holiday partner they think they want. People have expectations they don't talk about - they just get upset rather than talk it over, and end up throwing out the baby with the bathwater so to speak.

What evidence have you got to support your claim?

January is National Breakup Month

Why? For some, it feels like the first chance to make a clean break after the holidays (and the last chance before Valentine's Day rolls around.) And many men say they just don't want to be on the hook for the required Valentine's Day gift/flower arrangement/romantic dinner for a girl they're not really that crazy about. For others, the breakup is part of the New Year's resolution value package that includes getting a better job, losing the love handles, and embarking on a mission to find true love.

Breaking up before xmas trims the gift giving bill.
It also frees up the social calender (no going to the soon to be inlaw's house having to answer questions about when they are going to make an honest person out of their daughter)
In general just pressure

Because they think during the Christmas/New Year period they will give their relationship on last chance before they call it quits. Unfortunately, this time of the year is quite hectic (especially if you have relatives and friends around to entertain) and puts additional stress on a already failing system resulting in a large number of couples breaking up.

Hope that answers your question.

Because that is the most stressful time of year. Present buying compounds money problems and everything comes to a head.

So they won't have to spend on a christmas gift and still be able to do someone different during all night partying on New Year's eve.

I bet it's because of the changes in routine.

My wife and I have never had a week like that where we have almost nothing to do. We had some good times, but we also were ready to choke each other at times.

Also people get drunk and act stupid. Problems result from that....

if it's before christmas, then they are cheap and are trying to cut down on the gifts they have to buy. For new year, maybe it's their resolution, and after that is the last chance you have before V-day when most girls want to hear "I love you"
