You should never use fabric softener, first of all. It leaves an oily film on the fibers of everything and this leads to a quicker wearing-out of the fabric. And using it both in the wash and the dryer is overkill, for sure. Basically what you are doing is putting your towels in the wash and redirtying them with two different greasy products. It's no wonder they smell - the build-up of fabric softening chemicals is keeping the towels from drying you and themselves the way they should. They are holding onto moisture and what you're smelling is probably mildew or something similar. Stop using fabric softener. It is an unnecessary product.

Two things...if u let the towels sit wet (in the washer too long before drying or hanging up to dry after use in the bathroom) they will start to mildew/mold b/c the air is drying them in a wad. Also, it could be that you're using too much fabric softener and it isn't allowing the chemicals to rinse out properly, so they're not drying properly- softener actually coats fabrics in an invisible wax like coating causing water/dirt/etc. to stay trapped in the fibers. Try only using softener in just the wash or just the dryer.

Sometimes mildew odors will linger wash after wash. Try putting a cup of regular white vinegar in the wash cycle of each load. It gets rid of the smell, prevents mildew from growing (if you forget to put a load in the dryer) and makes whites whiter. Let us know if this works for you. I always use vinegar in every wash load.
