I'm on NTL broad band. Apparently 8Mb service but it doesn't seem to be much faster than slower speed services I use else where. Is there a way of checking what service I am ACTUALLY receiving and if it is slower how I get it upgraded towhat I am paying for.

ALso has anyone else had this problem?

You can check your connection speed at a few different web sites, the most widely accepted sites for accuracy can be found here;

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

If you are not getting the connection speed you are paying for contact your isp with these test results. If you are consistently,( ie never, obtaining the advertised speed), getting lower speeds than advertised, (check using both sites, multiple times daily and document the results) you are entitled to a price break on your monthly service. After all, if you are paying for 8mbs/ down and receiving 3, the isp is either guilty of false advertisement, or a poor connection.

Try pcpitstop.com -- they have a broadband speed tester.

You actually share the Internet connection with up to 50 people. If they're all downloading you'll definitely notice slower performance.

We upgraded to a 2MB service from talktalk from a 512k service from a smaller provider. Normally performance is identical. We only get an improvement when doing big downloads

this is a common misconception,isps promise 8m/bit connection speed knowing the customer will never actually get this
this is because certain factors need to be taken into consideration,such as network traffic,and distance from your nearest telephone exchange
to get the actual 8m/bit speed you would have to a)live next door to the exchange b)use the internet at 3 a.m in the morning c)make sure your computer is fully clear of spyware and viruses d)also make sure you are using a modern network card,using a usb type of connection is only half the connection speed of a ethernet network card,and make sure your computer is close to the telephone socket(or more to the point,the micro-filter),if you want to use your p.c upstairs use the filter at the end of the extension and not downstairs
if you want a speed test try this link...http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/
good luck mate

Try this site : http://speedcheck.ispconnect.co.uk/

Your ISP will point out the fine print that says UP TO 8mb, that's quite usual. Speed can vary with many things, including how busy the net is.

Broadbandreports has a speedtest. It also offers help with getting your speed up to where it should be. Take a look around the site and ask for help if you need it.
