Great idea! It saves people from having to spend a bundle of money on big ticket items (swings, cribs, etc) but with all the little things added up, it will still save you a bundle of money. When I worked at Toys R Us (manager in the baby dept) it was a very hot thing to do. Register for all little items...nothing over like $20 and people had a good time. Plus it saves on duplicates (who can't use 3 packs of diapers, but who needs 2 swings?) and it keeps people from "feeling" guilty at the shower because they had a smaller gift. Good Luck!

Here's an idea. Have a regular baby shower.....but get a diaper cake filled with the neccesities for the centerpiece!! The people THROWING the baby shower would purchase the cake and fill it with all these neccesities!!! The mommy would get tons of diapers, wipes, diapering accesories, bathing accesories, diaper bag items, and breastfeeding items (if applicable). Put it in the middle of the gift table.....a beautiful centerpiece (better than flowers!!) and a gift all in one. PLUS it will make a great conversation starter for people who don't know each other!!
Just an idea. I think, otherwise, mommy could wind up with TOO MANY Size 1 diapers, formula that doesn't agree with baby (formula is tricky that way.....I always recommend going with what the hospital used or the pediatrician recommends!), or too many wipes!!
Good luck planning the shower....they are so much fun!!!

I am a mother of an 8th month old and I can tell you that it is a great thing becasue I still have "necessities" from the baby shower; the only thing I really buy is diapers. I even had enough to make up a "necessities" basket for another friend who was pregnant because I did not have the time to go buy a present becasue of my baby. And she was also happy for it.

Its a great thing if the mother to be already has (or has the means to in the future to get) the other non-necessity type things.
It is not as fun for the person doing the shopping as buying the cutesie things are. But, they are things that the new parents NEED.
Another good idea.....the girls from church gave me a shower for my 4th baby and knew I needed a new stroller. So they passed the word along and each lady gave me a gift card (varying amounts) for the same store (Target in my case). This was great. I was able to get an expensive item without one person having to shell out a big some of $$$$.

I think it is a great idea for a second or third pregnancy, but I would go more traditional for my first pregnancy. I would not ask for formula though, because you never know what kind your baby will take. If you want help with the formula maybe you could hint to a few good friends/family that you would like gift cards to help purchase formula after you know what brand baby will use. I would also let people know if you are partial to other brands as far as the diapers, wipes, and bath supplies goes. That way you will get what you like to use.

Here’s an idea! Instead of having a necessities baby shower have a regular one where the mother registers, but put together a basket of goodies. Like a bottle of wine, glasses, cheeses, and crackers. Put on the invitations that you are having a raffle and if you bring a necessity like diapers or wipes you get one entry for the basket per item you bring.

OMG, that is all i wanted for my shower for my son and everyone thought that was a good idea. I wanted things like diapers, wipes, shampoo, baby wash, oils, lotions, powders, things that you use everyday. My son is 8 months old and i am still using some of the things i got at the shower!!!!! I had recieved enough wipes that they lasted till my son was 5.5 months old!!!! It was wonderful! I think that a necessities shower is the best idea ever

People usually get the necessities for you anyway, and if you register somewhere they will know what you need. I think you should just have a regular baby shower, but put on your invite where you are registered. This way you will get what you need...probably along with lots of other cute stuff for your little one. Good luck, hope this helps!

I think a necessitites shower is more practical for a 2nd baby (or 3rd or 4th etc.). But for a first time shower I think that other things should be bought as well and I'm sure people want to buy you and your baby other things. But in the end its up to you. You're the mommy to be! Good Luck!!

I would not want one only because I like certain brands especially when dealing with formulas. The best shower present is a gift card from Walmart or Target. They can get what they want!
