A BFA is a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Yes, its a Bachelor's degree.

An MFA is a Masters of Fine Arts. A Master's degree.

With a BFA you can get jobs in the art field and so some teaching.

With a Masters you can teach college level. You can teach college level but usually as adjunct faculty but not at all colleges.

BFA is Bachelor of Fine Arts and MFA is Masters of Fine Art. You would spend 4 years getting your BFA and an additional 2 years to get your MFA.

BFA is a Bachelors of Fine Arts... the difference between that and a BA in Studio Art (or BA in Music, Creative Writing, Dance, or what have you) is that the BFA generally requires a thesis and has more required courses (where as a BA has more general electives).

MFA is Master of Fine Arts. Originally it was intended as a 3 year degree, but these days 2 years of study is more common. It is a "terminal" degree, meaning that there is no PhD degree beyond it. An MFA is generally required for teaching art at the college level. There has been talk of having PhD in studio arts, but as far as I know there are none.

While there are many successful artists who don't have a MFA, it is pretty common for serious contemporary artists (as opposed to those preferring a more traditional style) to persue earning one. It's also common for serious contemporary artists to pooh-pooh the value of the education their received, but my experience (and what I've observed in others) is that it is actually quite useful.
