it usually lowers it, since it interfers with the ordered arrangement of the molecules(or ions) in a crystal.

They, indeed, usually lower it.

The particles want to attach as they loose energy and move closer and arrange (usually in a crystal shape) themselves. The impurity gets in the way so they can not connect. Sooner, or later, they will probably 'squeeze' the impurity out of the way.

Get an "A".
