Yes, they do. They are pretty smart, so they can learn tricks. They are clean (but require their bedding cleaned regularly so they don't smell), they are affectionnate, and they don't need too much room. They are great 'shoulder' pets, and love to interact with people. They rarely bite; I've raised rats before and have only been bitten by one evil female (she bit me repeatedly, but that's beside the point). Also, they are not expensive.

Some people are repulsed by rats, so that's something you will have to deal with, but all in all, rats are one of the best pets out there.

Rats make great pets. They are very clean. They can also be taught to do tricks and they also learn to recongize thier name and specific people. They have favorites when it comes to foods also. I would buy a female rat because males tend to have a bit of an offensive odor, but still friendly no the less. I would hose them in a twenty long aquarium - that is 30"L X 12"H X 12" W. Also make sure you provide a screen lid as he or she will escape. Give him/her a wheel and a box/nest to sleep in. Use pine bedding. Feed a good quality rat food and fresh water in a water bottle and your rat should be happy as can be. They also like to eat dry dog or cat food. Rats can live up to 7 years if kept for properly. If you get a rat a possible good name for it would be "scabbers". That was the rat from the Harry Potter books. Just a thought. Another good name is "Ben", from the 1950ish movie. Enjoy!

OMG, yes!!
A lot of people have the wrong idea about rats.

I "saved" one that my ex bought for snake food. The snake always ate the little mice but my ex decided to "save money" and try the rats instead one day... the first one squealed and I couldn't stand it so I ran in there and saved the other (the mice never made a sound so I was okay w/ that as long as I didn't see it)....

Anyhow, that was several years and 3 rats ago. I love rats! I never in a million years thought I could love a rat, lol. I grew up w/ hampsters and gerbils and rats are 100X better pets; they are very, very, very intellegent creatures. If you are considering one, please get 2, they are very social. You won't regret it!!!!!

Yes rats can make a good pets. Although they dont' have long life span. I raise rats before, they have babies. If you handle them when they are babies they can be very friendly, playful, learn tricks. My rat Gizmo learn few tricks, most of mine loves to be held, but his wife was a pain in the butt, tend to bites.

yes they do... they're clean and very friendly... like any other animal... be nice to it and it will be nice to you... if you attack it, it will fight back... i had 3 pet rats growing up. they were wonderful. they let you play with them, and they're not boring like gerbils! and they're incredibly smart... they will build things to try to get out of their cage. it's AMAZING!
