You are correct, Catholic politicians supporting abortion is sinful and contradictory.
The Church law involved is Canon 915: Those who are excommunicated or interdicted after the imposition or declaration of the penalty and others who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' statement "Catholics in Political Life" says:
Therefore, like every Catholic generation before us, we must be guided by the words of St. Paul, “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the Body and Blood of the Lord” (1 Cor 11:27).
And continues that it is up to each Bishop in their diocese and on a case by case basis to decide whether or not to deny Holy Communion to Catholic politicians because of their public support of abortion.

Pastor Billy says: very directly Heidi they aren't truly practising Catholic as they lead others by their civil authority into sin and condone this sin by their inaction in these positions of authority to return our secular communities to God's equilibrium. It is my greatest hope that more bishops will not administer the sacraments to these person and direct the parish priests to not administer the sacraments of the Church to these individuals who openly support is entitled by the several Popes including John Paul II as the "culture of death"
Heidi have you ever protested outside an abortion clinic? If you haven't go take a look sometime who do you think form the vast majority of protesters voicing their spiritual and civil rights against this murder called abortion? Practising Catholics ;)

Traditionally, they can't. If they are Roman Catholics in Communion with the the Church in Rome, they are wrong. However it's possible for someone to say they are a Catholic and not actually believe in Catholicism (cough*Kennedys*cough)
It's funny that more Catholics will listen to a Catholic politician than the Pope.
To you down there, ABORTION IS A HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE.

Many catholics do not believe that abortion is wrong (and you may not like hearing that but it is true; some catholics are pro-choice). Even those that do know that religion has no place in politics. She may personally believe it is wrong but is smart and strong enough to put aside her personal moral code when it comes to matters of law. I wish more politicians could do that. There is nothing wrong with people having faith but it has absolutely NO place in our government. People who cannot see the danger in this are just lucky to believe what the majority does; if christians were a minority in the US, there would be a lot more separation of church and state.

Religion has no hindrance on your view of abortion. There are plenty of religious people who do not consider fetuses to be babies, thus they support abortion. That doesn't make them "traitors to their religion" because there is nothing said in the bible or any religious text about these issues (that wasn't placed there very recently by religious zealots to forward conservatism). The bottom line is that being pro-life is not strictly bound to religious people, and being pro-choice is not strictly bound to non-religious people.

Because it should be ones own religious values that prevent them from getting an abortion. Not because the Government says they can not get an abortion.

The government is supposed to work for everyone, not just the Catholics. Most Americans seem to want choice.

I believe she supports a woman's right to choose, and I don't believe she has had any abortions herself...if she did, she would have the ability to repent for her sins to God.

THEY STILL HAVEN'T FIGURED OUT THAT ABORTION IS KILLING A HUMAN BEING BY DEFINITION. DUHHHHHH. THEY CAN CALL IT ANYTHING THEY WANT. ITS WHAT AL GORE WOULD CALLS AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH. WHETHER OR NOT FOLKS HAVE A RIGHT TO IT IS THE DEBATE. I ONCE SAW A FIGURE OF @50,000,000 ABORTED CHILDREN SINCE THE SLAUGHTER BEGAN EITHER FOR HEALTH OF THE MOTHER OR FOR CONVENIENCE.
