It happens, but not much. Society is really against it, and a lot of people believe it's illegal in the US. But I'm a member of a mailing list of over 1100 barefooters, people of all 'walks' of life who have one thing in common -we don't like shoes. Most of us will do our shopping barefoot, since regardless of the persistant myth it is NOT against the law to go barefoot in stores or restaurants. See source for some excellent materials. Quite a few stores have a store dress code and they can do that -legally speaking they could require you to wear a clown's nose if they wanted to :-P - but if they're quoting a health dept law that's plain and simple a lie. Walmart, btw, has NO corporate policy against bare feet; some US members of the SBL mailing list have written to their corporate offices, and while local managers are free to set their own dress codes this is not a corporate rule.

I've only seen other barefooters (apart from meeting list members) a handful of times in the ten years I've gone barefoot in the Netherlands, where I live. I think it's fun to see a 'kindred sole' (sorry, bad pun) when doing something that is so uncommon!

I shop barefoot always. I don't see any problems with doing this. If people want to be barefoot I say leave them alone to do as they wish.

There is nothing illegal, immoral, or wrong about being barefoot in public.

I see hundreds of people going around in stupid flip-flops and nobody seems to mind that much at all. But I think flip-flops are dumb and they provide no foot support or protection. Junk the Flip-flops and either get quality shoes or sandals or be barefoot.

Never done it; never will. And the stores around here all have signs saying NO SHOWES, NO SHIRT, NO SERVICE. They won't allow you to shop without shoes or a shirt. If you go in there without either or both, they will kick you out asking you to put them on, then you can come back in. Not even kids can go in barefooted. Maybe the very small town country stores do allow this because they know everyone, etc , but not the bigger towns.

I've gone shopping in my bare feet at the beach. Seems that stores around the ocean are more tolerant of this. I saw a few others barefoot too at 7-11, Subway, Food Lion, t-shirt shops, pizza place. I think people look really laid back and chillin' when they go barefoot at the beach. They may look a little freaky if they were barefoot in the middle of a big city though.
