First get the size of your room than you can go to Sears and the staff there will help you select the best unit for the space you need to cool.

Good luck and stay cool

1st,theory of operation:
A/C is a heat transfer system. The evaporator removes heat from the area to be cooled and transfers it to the condenser.Heat is removed from the condenser and transferred to the cooler outside air.You cannot "make cold" you can only transfer heat. What makes the system work is the low boiling point of the refrigerant, common brand name is "freon".The compressor in the system is used to move the refrigerant throughout the system.Second part of your question concerning best unit to buy:if the room is about 12 x 12,a 9000 BTU A/C will be fine.Just buy the cheapest one you can find. Most window units are considered throw-aways.If the last 5 years you got your moneys worth.
