The movies never explain was causes zombies, but characters speculate that it's some sort of disease.
The new movie ended with the survivors thinking they've escaped by boat only to be attacked (and presumably killed) by zombies on the island where they land after running out of fuel.

Did you watch the movie?? It all started from an unknown source, that is why it could not be controlled or stopped. All it took was one and then the one zombie just had to bite or pass on its saliva onto another human and then it would be infected and turn to zombies. In the newest movie it did not end good. It left off as a cliff hanger, just people screaming and them the movie went black. So really what ened up happening is up to your imagination. Hoped I helped :)

in the original they escape by helicopter leaving the zombies behind, in the re-make they just drove off in their armoured truck......thats what my hubby says anyway.....he also says it doesnt say how they turned into zombies in the first place but to be turned into a zombie you have to be bitten by one....
