Sometimes, even when one mentions that they are from Mexico, they take it as an offencive remark. Any thoughts?

I think that it is because, "Mexican" has come to have a bad stigma over the years. People many times connect the term Mexican, to lazy criminals or gangsters I don't know why they would take offense to saying they are from Mexico, But I can see Mexican. Now many people refer to them as hispanic, I don't think that term carries the same stigma a Mexican does. Also there are many people in America who may be of mexican descent, but their families have been here for many generations, so they are really just as American as anybody else. Many of us have ancestors who emmigtrated from England centuries ago, that does not make us British.

I noticed that also. I'm very aware there are different latin countries and not all of them are from Mexico. I have noticed that even some true Mexicans seem to be surprised or offended that I knew that they were mexican, opposed to another latin country. I can tell the difference since my boyfriend/fiance is from Mexico.

But, like everyone on here states, all latin people are not from Mexico. I'm assuming that get offended from being assumed to because Mexico is such a poor country. Maybe they don't get offended, maybe they just get tired of people assuming it.

Are you sure they are Mexican? Because I don't know any Mexicans getting upset at being called Mexican. However, I know a BUNCH of non-Mexican Hispanics that get upset at being called Mexican. And that's because they view it as a racist thing - not all hispanics are from Mexico just like all blacks are not from Africa, all whites are not from Europe and all asians are not from China.

Do people from Mexico get offended when called "Mexican?" Which people called Mexican by whom? Under what circumstances? Your assumption is rather broad, and unsupported by any real data.

I haven't found that to be true.

I live in a community with lots of Latinos. They only time they might be offended is if you assume they're from Mexico; in my community, a lot of them are from South America.

they actually prefer latino....some latin cultures view mexicans as dirty and beneath them and there are also sub cultures within the different latin communities...i.e. in mexico those from guadalajara view the citizens from mexico city with disdain and think they are nasty ppl. while some from others areas of mexico think the same about others. also the majority of latino's in mexico dislike blacks immensely, why...well they have their own judgments, they also don't like asians either...it just goes to show you there is judgment of each other in all races.

Because they are ashamed of thier own origins. Another thought is maybe they are a non-Mexican Hispanic and they do not like to be called what they are not.

Uh. They don't. I've never known a Mexican who cared if you referred to him as such.
Now if you use it in a derogatory manner....I'm sure that would make anybody angry.
