My son has a ps2 and some of the games come up disc read error when he puts them into the console. However they work fine on his friends console. My parents have also had this problem with an interactive dvd game. The discs have been cleaned (gently) and the machines have had their lenses cleaned but still no joy. Anybody got any ideas what may be the cause?

I used a dry cotton wool swab/cotton bud to clean the lens - did this carefully so as not to disturb anything.

The lenses must still be dirty (what was used to clean them ?), or pushed too far down while being cleaned in which case you'll have to adjust the position of the laser, which isn't easy.

This is a very common problem with PS2's. The drive is dirty, but a DVD/CD cleaner will not help. You can:

1. Open up the PS2 and clean the lens using an cotton swab and rubbing alcohol

2. Trade-in your PS2 at EBGames for credit, if you are lucky they don't check for the disc read error.

3. Sell it on As-is on EBAY, and use the money to buy a new PS2

1. What model Ps2 do you have, the larger or thinner one, and 2. What is the color of the "shiny side" of the disk? The reason I ask is because some PS2 games have a darker blue shiny side. The older, bigger models of PS2 have difficulties reading these. If neither of these conditions apply, it could be your disk, or perhaps even your PS2 is going.

It could be the version of the system or it could the condition of the disc or it could be the eye got damaged. Where did you get your PS2? I know these things. I'm a PS2 owner. I agree the eye IS hard to adjust.

Do the PS2's have the same firmware???

Some of the older consoles esp. the larger ones(not the slim ones) have trouble reading new games.

update the firmware or buy a Wii!!!
