The mother, the woman ironing is guilty, but also confused. She is questioning herself with questions such as these. Is Emily wrong? Was she wrong? Who caused it? In most societies mothers have much more responsibilty than they do power. The second world war caused many women such as the narrator of this story to work outside the home. This sort of work caused much guilt to women.
