They didnt help me. I had a natural birth; meaning no pain meds or intervention. I sorta developed my own way of dealing with the pain and breathing. Nothing I learned in the Lamaz class was that helpful.

I took lamaze and while the whole breathing thing didn't help me a bit, I did learn a lot from the class about what to expect during labor and delivery. I recommend the classes purely based on more information is better than less information. That was the only class that really prepared me for what to expect in the delivery room.

Honestly, I don't think I really used many of the techniques. But you should take the class anyway. There might be one or two things you pick up that you find helpful.

They usually teach more than just breathing. We took the weekend 2 day course and I found some of the other informaiton interesting. And if nothing else, it helped me know what was happening and I think it helped me to be not nervous and calm.

I would say take it just because.

Lamaze class was very helpful for me. I use the birthing ball (exercise ball) to bounce on at home during contractions. My husband helped me with the breathing and that helped alot especially while giving birth. I had a natural childbirth. I taught me what to expect (although things do not always go as planned). I was taught when to go to hospital, what to take, etc. You do not want to go to the hospital too early because they will just send you back home. I went to the hospital when I was 4-5 cm dilated. At that point they will not send you home and you do not have to worry about going home to come back. I was taught how to relax (music, massages, etc.) In addition, you also get a chance to interact with other pregnant couples.

It was a wonderful experience.

If you would like, go online to www.babyzone.com and see if you find any free lamaze classes in your area. I was able to take my class for free.

I would say take them.

I had my son naturally with no pain medication at all and although my midwife had told me to greet each contraction with an outbreath (to help me relax) I totally forgot it all when faced with the immense pain and got myself totally stressed!

Next time (I hope there will be a next time) I am going to take hypnobirthing and breathing classes as I intend to have another natural birth and think that these techniques would make it easier to cope with the contractions.

I will tell you what I didn't take them and when I was in the moment I really don't think they would have helped. What helped was have mom and mom in law there telling me to breathe. I thought the classes would be a waste of time for me and I still do.

i took them. i had a midwife and she taught the class. they worked for awhile but by the time i was in active labor i kinda threw it all out the window! take the class if you have the time, and are interested. if not don't worry to much, you'll know what to do when the time comes. you could also research it yourself and buy a book. looking back the class didn't really offer me any knowledge or anything that i hadn't already read or figured out myself!

i'm sure they really do help. but what helps the most is having someone at your side during birth to help you focus your breathing. i didn't take any classes and i did pretty good just from reading about breathing techniques. but once i got super close to pushing it got really hard to control the pain with breathing until my sister stepped in and helped me focus my breathing because she had helped many friends through labor. so you don't have to go to the classes, but definately make sure you have a good birthing parter who is really good at helping.

you know I paid like 125.00 ( CALIFORNIA ) and the money was well wasted.... you can do some research online that tells you exactly what they are going to " teach " you.... its just some deep controlled breathing they teach you and the rest is just explainingthe birth and what this and that stands for and your options for birthing drugs! Besides when you are in labor. you don't really " remember " what they tought you in that class and especially how to breath! you just want the darn thing out ! IMAO
