You are experiancing multiple problems here and so nobody will be able to solve all of them or maybe not even any of them. The first one I will address is the McAfee problem.
Anytime you wish to remove a security software program which has a Firewall and an Anti-Virus program you need to go to the manufactures website, in this case it is McAfee so you can utilize the chat feature and request the full removal tool. The technician will provide a link right through the chat window, and will help you run it, but then you will need to do a reboot in order to finish the removal. During the removal a lot of folders will suddenly appear on your desktop, this is normal, and they will be gone after you reboot. They will look transparent, ghosted, as they reside in the hidden folders and files section of your OS.
It is very important to fully remove any security solution that has a Firewall or Anti-virus program as these sorts of programs must embed deeply into the OS in order to carry out their funcitons of protecting the computer and OS. Due to this the Add/Remove applet is NOT adequent in removing them. Each product has its own removal tool accessable only via the manufacturer. Some are more willing than others to give it up, and Norton is the worst in its unwillingness to provide the tools needed. Now, both McAfee and Norton/Symantic use TWO different tools for each solution. One is for the intended purpose of a partial removal during some sort of maintanance need and the other is for a full removal. I question the need for two tools, and I always get the full tool regardless of what I am needing to do. With this tool you will be able to remove the product, update it with the most current verion which is compatable with XP.
Now, the problems you are experiancing with your files could very well be a permission problem. XP uses the NTFS file system which has built in security features that your old file system with FAT32 or FAT did not have. It is a far preferable system with much needed security, but during an upgrade problmes such as you are experiancing can and do occur.
I suggest you go to a Microsoft Newsgroup, hold on and I will provide a link for you:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.security_admin
Now, you need a .Net Passport to use this newsgroup, but if you have a hotmail or windows live mail account that is your passport and you simply put in your address and password to participate in the newsgroup.
The experts there can be a bit testy, and so it is important you post your question to the right newsgroup, which is the one I provided a link for, and you need to provide detailed information about your computer configuration, your version such as home or pro, and all the how the upgrade process went, outlining any issues which came up etc. You also need to write what steps you have already taken to try to resolve the issue, as they don't like hand spooning information to those who are not willing to help themsleves. You can say you went to the Microsoft knowlege base without any luck, tell them how inexperianced you are will go a long way to them feeling sorry for you and not biting your hand off too. ;-)
Anyway, good luck and a very nice day to you.
