That's a tough one because so many of the really talented actors today are from another country.
Excluding them, I'd have to say Meryl Streep born 6/29 in Summit, New Jersey. She's also considered the greatest living film actress by reviewers.
She is consistently good in the parts she plays. Not all of them have been good roles but she gives 100% of her talent to every role. That's real talent and dedication to the profession of acting. So many actors are more interested in being a "celebrities" than an actor. They love fame and attention more than they love being an actor.
For male actor, this is really hard for me to admit. Leonardo DiCaprio born 11/11 in Hollywood, CA.
I don't go out of my way to see his films. I really respect that he didn't take the easy route with his career and make films that would appeal to his bubblegum popping fan base. Instead he steadily works at his craft and takes on very challenging roles. I feel like he avoids the celebrity limelight because he wants to be noticed for his work.
They give dignity and respect to the acting profession.

Hilary Swank - I think she has an aura of like role model of independent women,also who seems as strong as a person,and great ability to express an emotion as an actress.I like Reese Witherspoon too because her smile kind of remainds me a joy and happiness of life.I think she's well determinded woman and well mannered.Also Renee Zellweger..I once met her and she's so delightful!She is wonderful I think. Although..you know it's hard to choose from only American actors!

Well, for my favorite male actor I love Denzel Washington and Terrance Howard.
They never fail to provide excellent movies and I'm always on my tippy toes to see what kind of movie they'll do next.

my favourite actor is Johnny Depp, because he is the most versatile and talented actor , cause of the unusual roles he portrays .. he can be serious [eg. 'blow' and 'secret window] or child-like [eg. "finding neverland' and 'edward scissorhands'] or totally crazy [eg. 'fear and loathing in las vegas' and as 'willy wonka' in ''charlie and the chocolate factory'' or as the hilarious ''Capt. Jack Sparrow'' in both ''Pirates of the Caribbean'' movies and he was even nominated for a best actor oscar for "Pirates of the Caribbean: the curse of the black pearl"

My favorite is Jack Nicholson because of his wide range in acting ability such as his versatility in playing a scary bad guy, or funny guy and his ability to be dramatic when a scene calls for it.

i have always loved Will Smith...he is a really great in his dedication to his work...you can tell he cares about the story...as far as actress....i would have to say Julia Roberts...
also, Jeff Goldblum is very underrated....his delivery is awesome and unique...
