How can I get a company to sponsor an event, like a social gathering?

I am organizing a dance competition and would like major companies to sponsor the event. I want to be able to cover all aspects of promotions without actually coming out of pocket.

You need to dress and speak professionally and go and talk to the companies in person. Call for an appointment with someone in Public Relations department and present them with your idea and discuss what it's for, who it helps, and what you need from the company and what benefits the company will get in return.
