I'm planning on making up flyers for my neighborhood and probably a mile or two radius and simply driving by and putting them in the mailboxes instead of trying to figure out eveyones address and paying to mail them.
Is this illegal?

Don't actually put them in the mailbox, because it is illegal. What I have done in the past is if it is nice to put it between their box and flag. If the weather is not great, put it in the newspaper box. Make it a bright color so they will be sure to see it.

Stay away from the mailboxes. It's illegal to put things in there if you don't work for the USPS and if you put it on the mailbox, either by tucking it in the the handle or wherever, you're obstructing the carrier from doing their job. The flyer will end up on the ground because it'll fall as it's not the carrier's job to ensure your flyer, which is using government property w/o paying for it, stays in place. And now there's litter all over the neighborhood with your name on it; not a good way to draw customers. Or worse, you might have a really crabby carrier who will COLLECT your flyers so no one will see it, and send it to management or a postal inspector (formal investigation if that happens) and you will get a call from the USPS. I know it's all much for babysitting services, but with identity thieves, terrorist threats, or just plain thieves in general, the postal service reserve the right to take mailbox tampering very seriously. Just trying to save you the headache... put the flyers on the front door or post them on bulletin boards. Word of mouth is great too.

Definitely do not touch mail boxes! That is a federal thing and carries fines. You sound like a responsible person. I think it would be fantastic to involve your parents in this enterprise. Not because they should solicit jobs fro you, but because they should be aware that you are interested in making your own money. Ask them for marketing tips. You may be able to post a flier at a local church or library, as well as a neighborhood grocery store. Your parents or teachers may have connections. Volunteer for children's programs at church or local organizations. If there is an after school program at a local elementary or YWCA/YMCA volunteer for these and make some connections. Babysitting is not the only thing that you can do. There are also paper routes, and neighbors that might like help with yard work. Don't overlook those possibilities. When you do get that job make sure that some of that money goes to a college fund. Good luck to you! I know that you will be successful!

You are absolutely breaking the law by putting unstamped mail into a mailbox. The Post Office monopoly prevents that from changing. You might notice that some places have an additional area for shopper papers or other local publications. You can get by with using those, but stay away from the Post Office and their stranglehold on personal mailboxes.

NEVER IN A MAILBOX! not matter where it is located on the property. This is federal property. Only legal papers may be placed there without postage. If you place porper postage on the item - it can be put there.

YES! I spent 42 years in advertising, and this is against postal regulations. Anything that goes "inside" the mail box must contain postage. However, you can hang things on the mail box.. Get some type of plastic baggie and put you ad material in the bag and hang it on the box.

I don't think you can put them in the mailbox for legal reasons, but we always get them by our front door or in the newspaper slot by our mailbox.

No, only in paper (like "journal") boxes. PO can fine you for putting them in and charge postage for mailboxes. Also, investing in door hangers is good. I know, it's a pain. Advertising in local papers and small yellow page directories (locally) worked well for me. Good luck with your biz!

Yes it should be as long as you don't put them through. One of my businesses actually does that on a very large scale (direct advertising), and where we conduct it all we have to check for is the no junk-mail signs people display.

It entirely depends on what country you are from though.
