Men's coats have buttons on the wearer's right. Women's have buttons on the wearer's left.

Hang the coat on a hanger in front of you. Slide your hand inside, though the buttons, or if it has a zipper with a flap over it- under the flap... think Napoeon-style..... Is it your right hand or your left?.... Remeber- "women are always right...."

Another way (although less accurate) is to look at the tailoring- are there seams on the front of the coat?... If the seams would accentuate a female figure (hourglass), it's a women's coat. If they're just straight up and down, it's probably a men's coat..
