I'm looking to buy an acoustic guitar. I'm a total novice. I've always wanted to learn how to play guitar so I've decided now is the time to do that.

Because I have no experience, Im not looking for a top of the line guitar right now. I also don't want to buy something that is cheap and low quality. I want a basic, fairly good quality, as inexpensive as possible guitar. I'm not looking to spend over $300 if possible.

I haven't visited any music stores because I am so inexperienced and I don't want to embarrass myself or get conviced to buy something that is not really what I'm looking for.

I've been looking online and seen many reccomendations for this guitar. http://www.qvc.com/qic/qvcapp.aspx/main.detail.tpl.DETAIL.item.E134338.ref.GBA/aol_refer.false/msn_refer.false/ref.GBA?cm_ven=GOOGLEBASE&cm_cat=ELECTRONICS&cm_pla=HOME%20AUDIO&cm_ite=E134338

Would this work for me? Are there any other guitars that you would reccommend? Thank You!

Do not be afraid to visit your local music store. Most people who work in music stores work with inexperienced people on a regular basis.
The best advice I can give is, do NOT buy any guitar without touching it first. If you order a guitar you haven't personally seen or touched, you don't know for sure what you'll be getting (especially one "made in china")

I would not recommend buying an acoustic guitar online if you are a beginner......out of the box, acoustic guitars can require a "setup" to make them much easier to play. Most music stores will do this for you, or have already set the guitar up before it's displayed in the store.
You have nothing to be embarassed about.....remember, EVERY one of the employees of that store started in the exact same position as you at some point. You need to have a salesperson help you get a guitar that is a good fit for your body and hands, and will be easiest for you to play. Also, the salesperson can play each guitar and show you the differences in the sound.
For $300, you can get a nice starter acoustic. I would recommend checking out the Washburn D10S or the Dean Tradition S. I have played both, and they are both very easy to play for beginners and sound great. Keep in mind that there are many, many other options out there as well. These are just two specific guitars that I have had experience with.
Also, if you have a friend that plays guitar, it would be a GREAT idea to take him/her along with you.

I would not recommend buying a guitar until you're ready to spend between $300-$400 (new). Unless you get extremely lucky and find a used gem at a pawn shop, you're hurting your long term chances of becoming a guitar player by spending the low dollar on an instrument who's sound qualities you may not be able to stand for very long.

Check out: Seagull and Alvarez. Both brands have some decent entry level guitars.

Also, dont' buy one until you've held it in your hands and played it. If you're not comfortable with that, find a friend who plays to go with you or have someone at the music store give you a demonstration...

Good luck to you.

I don't suggest you buy your first guitar online. I suggest you go to a place where you can try the guitars for yourself, then you'll know which one is more comfortable, because you don't know much about guitars then you don't want to shop online and buy something you don't really know how it fits you. I would suggest that you try a pawn shop, music store or maybe even classifieds, the very first guitar that I owned was used. Now I have a Fender Strat. But don't worry about brands because every guitar is different and if I list some makes and models that I find very comfortable and excellent, you might not be suited for them yet.

I got my son who's almost 16 now an electric guitar last year for his b/day. The guitar, amp, stand, strap, carrying case and amp chord cost only 250.00. It's a Peavey which is a good make. I also felt daft going in not knowing anything either as to what is good etc........If you go to a repuatable Guitar store, in your area, or call them and ask, how much a system would cost for an electric guitar etc. Call a few places and look on their site to actually see the guitar etc.
Then you'll need guitar lessons....in Canada they are $17.00 per 1/2hr., but well worth it.
