Aaargh, all this choosing subject stuff! I've been there, and I know how confusing it is. The important thing to remember, though, is that the Scottish system is designed to allow you to catch up on subjects that you missed in earlier years, if you want to take them up in 5th or 6th year. So yes, choosing your Standard Grades is important, but it's not the end of the world if you make a couple of wrong subject choices at this stage.

Hmmm... sounds to me like you're into your sciences. I think you should pick two sciences (or three if you want to, but that would mean a lot of science classes!), probably biology and chemistry. As for the rest of your subjects, choose ones that you enjoy and are likely to do well in. Finally, try not to worry too much about all this - there are loads of people around who can help you choose, like your family, guidance teacher, careers advisor, etc. Good luck, and enjoy your 3rd and 4th year. :o)

Okay, you'll definitely have to take maths, English and a foreign language so that's three down.

I'd take two sciences (preferably biology and chemistry, if you want to be a marine biologist) and computing, which is counted as another science subject by universities and is also in high demand these days. For your social subject choice, the decision is your own but perhaps geography will stand you in slightly better stead for marine biology. And for your creative subject, I'd take either music or art since teaching colleges prefer students to have one of these two.

So the list I'd recommend is:
- maths
- English
- your foreign language
- biology
- chemistry
- computing
- geography (but history or Modern Studies is fine if you prefer)
- art or music

That is eight subjects, which is usually what most Scottish schools offer. If you are taking more, do physics.

Also, I'd recommend making an appointment to your careers advisor who is very happy to meet with pupils as young as Second Year (take your parents with you if you want). And mind to study hard so you get into credit classes for all subjects. Good luck!

Its up to you. standard grades dont matter that much about your subjects for your career yet. thats more important at higher or a-level. it also depends on your school restrictions whether you have certain compulsory subjects. most schools compulsory subjects are the ones ou need for the careers your looking at anyway so i suggest anything you enjoy as you'll do better if you enjoy the subject.

The best advice I could have been given is choose subjects which you enjoy - apart from the obvious English, Maths, Science (or international equivalent) it doesn't matter which ones you choose as long as you pass them & you're more likely to pass those which you enjoy. Good luck!

Talk to careers guidence or Connexions. They shou;d be able to advise you which subjects would be essential.
