It could have been said as a reply to persons unruly courtroom behavior. (threat or sarcasm). Or it could be said legally to restrain a person from speaking in the courtroom and/or on the case. But it does not mean to physically place a barrier over someones mouth. (Never seen this in court) although if a judge ordered it for say saftey purposes (say a spitter or biter) I beleive it could legally be done. However most judges would just remove the person from the court and deaql with persons attorney's.

When the judge threatnes to gag a defendant it usually means that the judge and the jury should disregard what the person says or it could mean that the defendant is not allowed to speak about the facts of their case to anyone except their lawyer.

Means the defendant is not allowed to speak to outsiders (like the press or TV) and would be found in contempt of court should he break the gag order.

It means the defendant would be ordered to shut up. A gag order stops his/her testimony from going onto the record. It also bars the defendant from ever discussing the case.

They can't talk. Haven't you heard of a "gag order?" Both parties in the case can't say anything about the case to the press. It's a nice way of saying "shut up."

Just means that they can not discuss the case with anyone not directly involved (lawyers and such).
