I agree with you... if I know someone celebrates Christmas, I say merry Christmas. If I know they celebrate Solstice, I say happy Solstice. If I don't know what they celebrate, I say happy holidays. But I don't think this all started in protest of people saying Merry Christmas. What happened was some stores and businesses realized not every customer celebrates Christmas, and have employees give a more generic "Happy Holiday" greeting to accomodate everyone, and put up signs for "holiday sale" rather than "Christmas sale." This angered some Christians, who feel that everyone should say Merry Christmas, and only use the term Christmas, that to not say Christmas is somehow an insult to their beliefs and their holiday somehow. I don't think anyone ever had an issue with saying Merry Christmas-- just with stores and everyone else who is not Christian being told what they have to say.
