I have a laptop with 256Mb PC1 (2400) RAM and have a spare 256Mb PC2 (2400) RAM module and wanted to add it to have 512 Mb. Would they be compatible?

Yes, it should work. It may slow down your computer, though. RAM speed is multiplied, and if you mix types, your computer will pick the largest common multiplier that both types can run at. Most likely it will be 2100, but it might be even slower than that.

Pop the extra stick in, and look at your POST screen, it should count up your RAM and say what speed it's running at.

Yes, they will run together however the slower of the the two speeds will be assumed by the memory. This can be fixed by overclocking the motherboard, however for noobs this is not a good idea.
