I like sandy beaches and enjoy sight seeing and history in the day and eating out in the evening. I am not bothered about anywhere too lively, i would prefer somewhere more chilled out xxx.

Kefalonia is beautiful, and peaceful, and quite simply my favourite plac ein the world. It was where Captain Correlli's Mandolin was set ... Read the book before you go and you're guaranteed to have a particularlay dreamy time ...

Zakynthos is a great island.
It's between Italy and Greece, in a group of islands called the Eptanisa..
There are many historical places to visit, including great beaches. It's also pretty relaxed and laid back at the beach. About dining and night life I wouldn't know, because I was young when I went (with my parents a few years ago).
One of the places in Zakynthos that I would say is a must is the shipwreck. It's a beach that is only reachable by boat. It's gorgeous, but not sandy, but I'd still suggest you go.(Some boats that take you there only go there for 1-2 hours). It's a boat ride, and on it's way there also takes you to see other amazing places in the water(like small caves and interesting-shaped rocks)

anyways,
another great island is called skiathos. I went this summer, and the beaches were great(Koukounaries & Lalaria).

One of the most typical greek islands are Mykonos and Santorini. I went to Mykonos. It was beautiful, had really nice beaches. Very crowded, especially during July and August, and full of life/traffic. It was beautiful, but not so historical.

that's all i got..

No-one has mentioned it yet because not many people know about it but I recommend Limnos which is an island in the north Aegean. There is one direct flight a week from the UK with Excel Airways on Thursdays out of Gatwick, www.xl.com A return costs about £170. The capital of the island is Myrina, 15 miles from the airport (taxi costs £12) 3 superb (quiet) beaches in town. The Hotel Lemnos in the harbour has doubles for £28 a night with sea view balcony and air con. Plenty of good restaurants and only a handful of tourists around.

Give some thought about how to get to the different islands. There are direct flights from London to Rhodes - From there you can take the Ferry to a number of other islands that are not far away - You are even fairly close to Turkey when you are Rhodes.

From Athens to Crete is about 9 hours by Ferry - but there is a night Ferry that arrives at dawn. - Its a pleasant trip in the summer and you can get a room on the Ferry if you are willing to pay extra. - Crete is big island. - It would be useful to have a car there.

There are a number of islands that are very close to Athens in the Saronic Gulf. You can get to Hydra from Athens in about 1 hour by hydrofoil - and there are several other islands nearby. - Hydra's beaches are pretty rocky - There is not much sand. But it is an interesting place as no cars or motorcycles are allowed on the island. - Things are transported by Donkey.

If I was only going to go to one island, I would probably pick Santorini. It has sandy black sand beaches, ancient ruins, and spectacular scenary. - In about 1200 BC. there was big volcanic explosion there which sunk much of the island. Santorini is about 9 hours by Ferry from Athens.

I have been to all the big Greek Islands and Rhodes is by far the best. There is plenty to do - sightseeing, shopping, relaxing. You can also get a ferry to Kos and experience more than 1 island. I am off back there in June and it will be my 9th visit. Can highly recommend Pefkos as a resort. Lots of very good restaurants which are reasonably priced and plenty of bars. If you want history, take a trip to Lindos & Rhodes Town. Fab!!!!

Oh Princess! You are sooo lucky because I have the perfect island. Naxos has brilliant beaches (not at the main town) and hasn't been wrecked by too much development. Take a day trip (boat) to the sacred island of Delos where Apollo and his twin sister Artemis were born. If you want classic ruins and are open to great mysteries of the ancient world this will blow your mind.
You will find Naxos in the middle of the Aegean - about four hours by fast ferry from Athens.
Καλο ταξιδι

Greece is amazing! I recommend Crete, a wonderful place, also Mykonos, very friendly people, i stayed at the Hotel Rhenia a family owned bungalows type of hotel, You'll be greeted by the owners two dog! Santorini, wow, the views are magnificent! Rhodes wasn't that nice, at least that was my experience, the room didn't have a TV, i had to pay for the A/C remote control!! thinking now it makes me laugh. Anyway Greece is beautiful!

Visit Crete, St Nikolaos, ''Hotel Blue Marine'' (if you can afford paying for 4 stars accomodation). You will not need to eat outside because it has an excellent Gourmet restaurant with local cuisine. I have been there in August. It is a new Hotel-opened in May 2006).
Or, visit Rhodes, Lindos, ''Mattina appartments'' (it is located next to a sandy beach) and you can visit archeological sites (Lindos is excellent). If you stay there you may go for food at the South of Rhodes where you can visit small villages with local cuisine.
Both islands have frequent flies and a lot of boats (since your available time is for 1 week).
However during June wherever you go in Greece you will enjoy yourself because it is not a peak period.
If you wish to find more info I invite you to visit my blog (elmamelenia's blog) at position ''my blogrolls'' several interesting sites regarding touristic information on Greece.
I wish you nice holidays wherever you decide to go.

Highly recommend the island of Crete and the resort for Elounda. I have been to Crete 3 times and it's fantastic for sightseeing and beaches. Elounda has a spawling harbour with wonderful tavernas. The resort is aimed at couples, families and the older generation. It also has some of the best hotels and apartments on the island. I've been to a lot of the Greek Islands and Crete is one of my favourites.

I would not recommend the mainland.

We went not too long ago and visited everywhere possible (we stayed for two weeks). The place we stayed at was located on Vasilias Beach. The Hotel we stayed in was called the Hotel Skiathos Club. It was really nice. I must admit when I was there I stayed chilled out the whole darn time. :) I highly recommend it. I'm sure they have a site somewhere, but my husband set it all up for us and I'm a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants type of gal, so I went sight unseen (or in this case viewed). lol I hope you have a great time. Take care! :)

Most of the Greek islands would be great I liked them all but Kos will probably be the best for the children because it has that cooling breeze which makes it a lot more comfortable.
