AVG - it's free, very good, and consumes very little of your system resources.

There is no shortage of good free antivirus programs. The 3 most popular are Antivir, Avast and AVG. All 3 are free for personal non commercial use. They come with a lifetime of free updates. You can find all 3 at: http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivirus/
You can read a review on all 3 at:
"Review: Free Antivirus Software" -- written by Mary Landesman, about.com (http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav.htm)
Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Of the 3, AVG antivirus uses the least amount of computer resources. It also is easy to use. Avast and Antivir are great too.
Both Norton and Kaspersky antivirus programs are good choices - though it will cost you a pretty penny to buy - but they are notorious for requiring a lot of computer resources and slows down a computer.

I had problems with Norton in 2005 and my computer hard drive was almost completely destroyed. I now use PC-cillin by Trend Micro. I haven't had a problem yet, and upgrading every year costs less than the initial fee.

I use AVG and so do loads of my friends. I have seen it reviewed in pc magazines and just as good as any paid for programme.
It does it's job and you can download updates whenever you want - it's completely free and no strings attached - what more could you ask for!

Avast anti-virus is the best program available. It's also completely free and the database is upgraded daily automatically. You can get it from download.com. Here is the link http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Edition/3000-2239_4-10602417.html?tag=lst-0-1

Not wise to skimp an Antivirus.
I recommend Norton as the best.
However, there are plenty of Cheapie AV items, but... you get what you pay for IMO.
