I think all of the people interpreted your question as a formatting question. Maybe they are correct. Maybe there is a another interpretation. So, let's look at it from another angle. Very simple question.....I am interpreting your question as: You want to know how many days have occured since 1/1 to a particular date in the year. That would be the "Day of the Year" as you ask above. If the interpretation is incorrect, then the answer is not correct either. It's a GIGO model ;-)
So here it is:
You have to know the begining date. Let's assume it to be 1/1/2006. For all of us this is Jan 1st,2006
You have to know the other date for you which you want to know how many days have occured. Let's assume it to be 5/1/2006 (for me in the US this is May 1st,2006).
So, then you use the function: Days360(First_Date,Second_Date)
Of course, you would put these dates as variables.
And, you would get the answer 149.
Hope this accomplishes the objective.

Try selecting the column, right-click & select "Format Cells" or simply type CTRL+1. Go to the Number tab and choose "date" as the category and select the format you'd prefer.
If the day is included in the original data, then it should work. If not, then I'd be able to help you more I had more information about the current formatting and data.

Right click on the cell or column, click format cells, click on NUMBER, then DATE, choose your selection, and then click OK.
OR, click on NUMBER, then CUSTOM, and enter the year that you'd like.
I have no idea what you just asked but I hope it helped!!! :\
