Mechanics tell me it depends if they are floatin brakes or not. Thats my question. Also for any Lanrover experts the dealer told me that if I use any pads other than Landrover pads that the brake light will go on and remain on, Is this true?

If it's an '03 model, you actually own a Discover II.

A floating calliper is one that can move side-to-side a small amount in order for the brakes to work. A Disco II has floating callipers front and rear, but the pads are different for each end.

Non-genuine pads affecting the warning light is what is technically called "a load of old cobblers". Good quality pads, properly fitted with the relevant additional hardware (eg pad wear sensor) should be just fine.

Many owners find they get warning light problems even with genuine pads being used, despite Land Rover's claims that it's aftermarket equipment that's the issue. Also, sensors for things like ABS can be easily damaged if your mechanic is too gorilla-like with components.

If you don't want to pay LR prices for the service, take the car to an independent garage you know are reputable, and then you've got some comeback if anything does go wrong.

If you can afford a landrover, you should be able to afford to pay somebody else to put breaks on it.
