Swear words evolve just like any other words. They are invented, or mutate from other words or come via other languages. The reason they are offensive is more to do with the manner in which they are used rather than the word itself. If an innocuous word is used to demean or insult a group/type of people then it often becomes taboo.
The word 'queynte' ( old english ) from which the C-word comes was in common use a few hundred years ago. When it became pejorative, it became a swear word.

well if you now look in the new 2007 dictionary that has been released then you will see that most slang words are now in the dictionary....c**t and d**k are considered as swearing because even if you weren't to use the real name instead of the slang....penis and vagina...you would still be insulted if you went up to someone and called them a 'penis'

English is a wonderfully fluid language, all our words are mixed up versions of Saxon, celtic, latin (therefore greek too) and french and other germanic languages.
Some of the words will have always been swear words, just derogatary terms, usually used in certain professions

That is a good question. Who said certain words were bad yet others aren't? And who said that certain words that mean something benign like Johnson or Mellons could be turned into something wrong. These words have been around forever. How is it a word like happy isn't a bad word yet gay which mean happy is turned into something bad!? Very interesting question. I wish I had the answer.

it's odd that people that curse the name of god without a thought are mortified by some slang

yeah, i get that too. like when i think about a word and say it over and over and over (you get the idea) it just looses the meaning completely.
