I know there are several titles, but I want the highest possible ranking of a military army. Is it general, or commander, or something else? Basically, what's the title of the person who takes charge of the army, the person whom the soldiers follow into battle?

The United States military services discontinued the rank of five stars shortly after WWII. The highest ranks in the military services are and have been General of the Army, Commandant of the Marine Corps, Fleet Admiral!

Those positions still exist however, the highest rank is that of an "O-10" or four stars!

Of course, the President of the United States is the highest military "commander" as the "Commander in Chief!"

The highest rank in the army, at least in America, is five star general, or General of the Army.

in the Army its a 5 star called general of the army
in the navy its a 5 star called admiral of the navy
they are only given out during the time of war.
the last ones were in Vietnam for a general and ww2 for an admiral
so in all other times the highest rand is a 4 star general or admiral

Which Army???

In the US the highest rank ever awarded was General of the Armies, a six star general. That rank has only been held by Washington and Pershing.

5 star general or 5 star admiral(navy) is the highest rank and I believe in the army that rank is called "general of the army".

Though you won't catch them leading men/women into battle very often.
