Platies have a very long life span but females tend to have a shorter life expectancy than of the males! This is possible due to the fact that females are put to do more work by having 10-200 fry a month!!!! Males dont have to suffer therefore they have longer life expectancies! With that said im going to have to say that females live 1-3 years and males live 3-5 years if kept under the right conditions!

2-3 years is not very old for a platy, but for a spawning female kept in relatively crappy conditions, it would be normal. However, properly kept, they can live over 5 years.

The web states 2-3 years. But I have had some in my aquarium for 6 years.
