It can be passed on through intercourse but don't worry its very common for women to get it through other means. I found this on a site:
Is bacterial vaginosis a sexually transmitted disease?
No, BV can affect any woman, including those who do not have sex. No bacterium is passed on that causes this condition. Sexual partners of women with BV do not need any treatment. However, some cases of BV seem to be sexually 'related'. It may develop after a change in sexual partner. In these cases, the infection is not 'caught' from anyone. However, a change in sexual partner may affect the balance of normal bacteria in the vagina.

BV is 100% not considered an STD. You can ask any qualified doctor. BV is a type of vaginal infection. Some are STDs but BV is not. If your girlfriend has trichamonas, that is an STD and call also cause a nasty odor and itching. BV is not something that is "passed" from a man to a woman. BV occurs when the natural bacteria that live in a woman's vagina severely multiply. This overgrowth of bacteria can be caused by many things including, douching, using soaps to wash the vaginal area, poor diet, intake of too much sugar, wearing panties with dyes, even sperm can change the vagina's environment which can cause BV. Now, although BV is not an STD, having multiple sex partners does increase the chance of a woman getting BV. So, don't think your girlfriend is cheating on you simply because she has BV. If you have other reasons to believe she's being unfaithful you may want to examine those, but BV is a not an indication of that. Now, if she has Trichamonas which is and STD, that might be a better indicator. I've posted a few links for you:

No it's not an std. Women of all ages, and even those who are virgins can get it. It does have equivalent symptoms to a yeast infection, together with itching, burning, and irritation. As a rule there will probably be no clumpy discharge with bv though. When there are symptoms it may well produce a fishy unpleasant scent ( i do know gross!), a thick grey or white discharge, burning, itching. Often the signs are not even reward. It is vitally usual, and most females will most commonly get it at the least as soon as of their lifetime. It's cureable with antibiotics however it may possibly reoccur. Hope I helped!

BV is not an STD. I had it before i ever had sex. Think of it like a yeast infection. Its very common and it can be cured. It can be passed from one partner to another but so can yeast infection... yes guys can get them too. Its not too fun to have but its not that big of a deal. Just make sure it gets treated.

There are two types of bacterial vaginosis: yeast infections and trichmoniasis. Yeast infections are not an STD. Trich is.

How old is she? Perhaps she got this from her girlfriend, did you consider this? but yes it an STD.
Perhaps I should have been more clear- typically bacterial vaginal infections are called yeast infections but when it is stated otherwise it is an STD that is being referred to an is hidden in the language.

I honestly don't think that it's an std. I always read in magazines that it is common and curable. Isn't it pretty much like a yeast infection? That's what I thought.......a woman's ph levels in her nether regions are extremely affected by little things such as perfumes, detergents, soaps, sweat, tight clothes, certain fabrics, etc.
