Most prebuilt computers come with an emergency restore disk, but it is useless unless you have the original hard drive functional. You might need to buy the Windows XP Operating System Disk too.
You can get a really good hard drive deal at Newegg.com

I would go with 120 GB, 7200 RPM and from Seagate or Hitachi.
As for the necessary missing OS problem you can get it here for around $139

Your main problem is that you bought an HP. HP's are over priced bad computers. If you go to best buy and ask anyone from geek squad what the most submitted to be repaired brands of computers they get in and they will tell you HP because they suck. usually bad faulty hardware (people dont know this but most of HP's hardware are third party parts from brands nobody has ever heard of), most of the time bad cooling systems (i have 2 friends whose HP's CPUs died out because of bad cooling systems). HP is a bad way to go for a computer, though they do make some pretty nice mice. Dell or Gateway, acers are cheap, but they will last you about 2 years, every dell i have had lasted about 4-6 years (my mom's dell has lasted 8 years and still cooking with its pentium 3 processor lol), gateway about the same.

I'm assuming you know you'll have to install Windows XP again and also hunt down all of the software drivers for your hardware? If this is an older Desktop make sure you get an IDE hard disk.
Maxtor, Samsung and Western Digital are all fine.

A 120GB-250GB hard drive should be plenty of space for your kids! A Western Digital hard drive should work fine. Get a restore CD from HP, I know that you don't have one, as they (HP) partition their hard drives to accommodate their restore software. When you restore, the computer will have all the stuff on it that it came with when it was new, including the partitioned hard drive. If you need an WinXP Home w/SP2 disc, get it OEM from newegg.com about $90.
