If a handicapped person is at the store, they probably have someone with them. Most undergo behavior modification. If you are uncomfortable with hugging them just say no thank you and walk away. If you feel like hugging them, say thanks I needed that. No need to freak out. They have feelings too.

Clearly not the popular answer but I would get very freaked out and say no. That would creep me out. Mentally handicapped or not, I would freak out if anyway just came up and tried to hug me. Even a little kid - one tried to do that once and I was like what the hell?? Go away... LOL!!!

I would never "freak". I actually worked at a group home for nine years and I still get hugs from former clients I worked with when I run into them. And I just saw my old neighbor boys who are grown and I haven't seen them in 10 yrs and they are developmentally disabled and they remembered me! Big Hugs in WalMart. It was nice.

That has happened to me before....Let me explain....i was picking out some deodorant or something and this little guy grabbed my shoulder I turned around and poor thing looked scary, and my face mustve showed it bc one of the women said to the other "oh, he scared her". But I tried to wipe that suprised look off of my face and I just said "Well hey, how ya been? He just smiled and they 3 walked away. I felt so bad about the "shocked" look i knew I had on my face, i asked another woman that was standing by me when this happened, if she saw what had happened.. She said no, that she thought I knew him. I couldnt get over it, so i walked a few aisles down to where they were and asked him how he had been, that is was good seeing him....I told the ladies that I didnt mean in harm by my expression. I try my hardest to look menatlly/physically handicapped people in the eyes. They deserve it.

Of course I would hug back. You should never deny someone a hug. Thats a slap in the face. And you should always feel priveleged that a special person wants to give you something that shows kindness.

I WOULD HUG BACK AND I HAVE. THEY ARE VERY LOVING AND HARMLESS, IT'S WHEN SOMEONE DEVELOPES A MENTAL ILLNESS THAT THEY CAN HARM YOU. I HAVE WORKED WITH THE MENTAL HANDICAP AND IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. I ALSO GOT A GROUP OF KIDS TO PLAY SPORTS WITH THEM AND ON THEIR OWN THEY CAME 3 TIMES A WEEK BECAUSE THEY ENJOYED IT SO MUCH !!!

put ur hand out first for a handshake if u see their coming to hug u and maybe that will stop the hug in process but if they insist make it a fast hug that way no one feels uncomfortable.

Haha! I wouldn't let just anyone hug me at the store and I imagine that they want to be treated equally so I would poke them in the eyes assuming they weren't wearing glasses. Then I would freak.
