Don't give reasons for leaving that are critical of the company or anyone in it- especially since you're going to work with your boss' relative.

Just tell him you've decided to accept a new opportunity and offer to be helpful in the transition.

You might even be able to make some overtime on off hours for awhile if you want if the company needs the help.

Don't say too much- if you start justifying you might say something you regret that could be misconstrued as criticism. There is nothing to feel guilty or bad about.

just be professional and to the point. u give him a written notice in two weeks. don't forget to thank him for giving u the opportunity and that u enjoyed working for him.right now u can give him a verbal warning just so he can start looking for a replacement. u can even ask him if he needs any assistance to ask u. he may need to ask u about ur day to day tasks. u can even help interview people or tell him the type of person best suited for your job.

be nice, emphasize the positive (how you have grown in your current position or some such bs), that it's nothing personal, but you have an opportunity you can't pass up...blah blah blah....sugar coat it, there is never any point in burning bridges and if you are staying "with the family", sounds likely you and he will cross paths down the road!

at the same time....look out for number 1....nobody else is going to!

Write up a letter of resignation. In the letter thank him for giving you the opportunity to work with the company for over seven years. Show that you appreciate the company and the experience that you have gathered from it.

From what you've said, the guy will be stressed anyway. Just give him your reasons for quitting, which I'm sure are valid. What else can you do?

Please thank him for the job and do what ever you can to help him through the process, you may want to even interview other people to replace you. You don't want to burn your bridges so be nice.
