It depends on what you mean by a young age. Certain activities can be too dangerous for children to do (such as using a stove, oven, knives, or other hazardous cooking implements). Doing laundry can also be risky since it often involves using hot water or different kinds of chemicals (such as bleach). That does not mean they can not help while being kept under close supervision. Give them little tasks and then increase the tasks as they become older and more mature.

I was in the kitchen cooking for as long as I can remember. I also remember folding clothes at a young age. As for laundry and cleaning, these came later (I assume because of the use of chemical products).
Kids should have a firm grasp on all these things by age 8-10, though.

Not at all. It is our job as parents to prepare our children for life on their own. My mom learned to do laundry and iron when she was 6. I learned when I was 12. My stepson is 13 and does all of his own laundry. My mom made my sister and I cook one meal a week and do cleaning chores from the time we were 10 and 12, respectively. I have friends that are in their early twenties, and they have no idea how to cook or do laundry because mommy has always done it for them. Our goal as parents should be raise strong, independent young adults.

No! Not at all!
I think it's a great idea to teach kids at a young age how to fold their own clothes, wash dishes, etc.
I've been cleaning house, folding clothes, doing the dishes for as long as I can remember, and I REALLY thank my mom for it now.
I am a very disciplined little cleaner, and don't leave messes around.
Most of my friends expect someone else to clean up after them (i.e. me, their parents, etc.)
I think teaching kids at a young age about cleaning, makes them a more responsible cleaner as they age.

No I don't think it is pointless. Quite the contrary. It does have a point: To help them learn how to do basic things in life that are necessary. I don't know what age you are referring to, but young children can certainly learn to help fold/hang up/put away clothes. While cooking, your children can help you measure out ingredients. This will not only help with a basic skill, but help improve their math skills.

Show by examples--have the child to work with you and you can explain as the work is being done. When my son first started working his clothes I got the soap tablets so he would not put too much detergent into the washer. We made dinner together, I would let him decide what we were having for dinner. He would get all of the items out and put them on the table. I would let him measured the dry and wet ingredients. I would cook and he would read the recipe to me. I would show him how to intrepid what the recipe was telling the person to do. They have step by step cook books for children.
Practice not perfection, encouragement will build strenght and self confidence in your children.
They have cook books and basic training books for children.

Do you feel like doing their laundry untill they are adults? Do you want them to do it the right way when they get older? It is easier to teach a young child than an adult! I have 5 kids and would not be able to do all the laundry. My oldest daughter gets her allowance according to how many loads she does during the week. She LOVES doing the laundry now!
Good Luck,
Jessica

No the more you teach them now the better. I had friends who had parents that did not teach them things and they were lost when they moved out on their own. I had been doing laundry since I was 7 and cooking ever earlier and when I left home it was easy.

I agree somethings can be too dangerous depending on the ages. I think it's important to teach these to kids though, they will need to learn them at some point and the sooner the better. I had to teach my husband how to do laundry, he had no idea how to use bleach, how to pretreat, why we use cold or hot water. Nobody will have to teach my son!

No way is any age too young to begin teaching your young ones good habits. More practice for them will make thier life and yours both easier in the long run.
