if a certain character is required, you must act as the character itself otherwise, just be yourself

That depends on what the audition is for. If for a role in a play...most auditions will have you read from the script...so be the character. If for a television show or commercial...be yourself.

Most directors will tell you what they're looking for.

Isn't an audition where you try to be the character---so I would think I act like the character.

The character, that is how Michael Dorn got the role of Worf. I remember him talking about it in an interview. He walked into the room with anger, and did not let up on it until he left. He said he knew he couldn't or he wouldn't have gotten the part.

Act yourself. Then prove that you can act the the character the director wants you to be. This way you show that you have talent. Good luck.

this is crucial. you are to act as your normal self until you are performing your audition piece. and as soon as your performance is complete, you are yourself again. if you try to act as a character the entire time, you will not be taken seriously.

Just give the man what he wants when he asks you. If you're freaking out about little bitty details you're gonna blow it. So treat it like you already blew it and break a leg. And don't bug me again, by the way.
