Some insurance companies will cover the costs if the problems in a marriage are causing medical problems. An affair has resulted in depression etc. However, it gets very tricky and the company may not cover both you and your spouse.
There's the resultant medical record of you going to a shrink / counselor. It's something you really need to think about before taking that step.

Most insurances do not cover marriage counseling because insurance is billed to the insurance company for a problem one person has. Some therapists fudge this rule and allow you to go to a few sessions and bring your spouse in and they agree to bill your insurance as if the spouse was not there. This type of therapy is called Conjoint Therapy because it is for two people. You can check if you have a HSA in addition (Health Spending Account) because that might allow you to get tax free reimbursements, I am not sure about this. Good luck. I had a lot of mariage therapy and I am now separated. Sometimes the end result is finding out you cannot live together. Other people are luckier.

Some medical plans do cover it, some don't. United Healthcare does cover family counseling. Check with your employer to see if they offer any type of employee assist program. This benefit is designed to help employee's manage stress and get over rough patches that come up in life. They usually will give you a referral and cover 3 or 4 visits and then you're on your own. Good luck.

Many employers have what's called an Employee Assistance Program and they provide mental health counselors (marriage, for kids, etc...) and credit counselors and such for free. Through my old employer we could go to a marriage counselor 8 times without charge. Some companies have contracts that require a small co-pay--but check with your employer and see if they something like that that doesn't go through your insurance. Good luck.

check with your medical insurance company. Might want to also check with your employer (if your company is large enough, they may have an employee assistance program). My insurance is Blue Cross etc and they cover it.

If they dont cover it, then seek help elsewhere - do a search on 'net in your area for free counseling - contact your local "mental health" association (in indiana they base the charges on income) - also if you are religious - check with local churches, sometimes they provide free counseling as well. Good luck!

It may not be under your specific plan to be covered. I've had BCBS and they covered my marriage counseling...
