Sexing goldfish is difficult. With young fish, it is nearly impossible. Females may be slightly chubbier and have a slightly more prominent vent.

During spawning, sexing is much more easy. Males develop pronounced white bumps known as tubercles on their gills and fins.

Edit: Ben, not most fish and frogs can switch sexes. A select few may have the ability to change (these are called hermaphrodites), but it is common. Most fish and frogs remain whichever gender they were born.
