I need two referees for a postgraduate course application... I can't get hold of my previous tutor and my old supervisor is on sabatical.. my past employer is not suitable for an academic reference.. who else can I use?... Personal friends aren't really accepted are they?

Check if your last university/school kept a reference on file for you - it would be a good starting point. The student programmes/examinations office there should be able to provide details of your academic history.

If you have a friend who holds a responsible position such as a doctor/teacher/vicar I'm sure their reference would be held in good stead. You should also include a note with your application that you haven't been able to contact the relevant tutors who knew your previous academic work.

Any past teacher that was impressed with your work and work ethic would be a good choice. I have even used teachers from high school before. Any College professors who you tlaked with enough to know you are probably your best choice.

I wouldnt reccomend friends though...they are really looking for someone who can vouch for your ability to excell in the classroom.
