There are only a few manufacturers that make HE (high efficiency) detergent for front loaders. Tide, Gain, Wisk, All, Cheer, and Arm & Hammer are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. This is a special low-sudsing type that works better for front loaders. You use a regular amount of it. If you are using regular detergent, you need to cut it by about half. If you use too much and have too many suds, run the clothes through a cold water wash without soap and it will rinse them out.

I use tide HE which is specifically designed for new front loading machines. If you are using regular soap I would say about 1/2 the recommended amount.

Front-loading machines use MUCH less soap than top-loaders. Use about 50% less than you would in a top-loader.

The left compartment is often for pre-wash detergent, the middle one for the common detergent and the right one for the softener. I frequently mix the bleach (about 0.5 a pint) with some water and pour it right now into the gadget. If the blanket isn't white, bleach will smash it. to that end you should apply another disinfectant.
