Cellulose is only roughage..
But, as it is indigestible, it has the effect of inhibiting the abortion of starch & sugars, -by just getting in the way of the solubilisation & absorbtion process & drawing it out. This effectively decreases the GI of the food (by releasing the sugars slower & helping to inhibit the insulin reaction) & therefore it does have a very benifiial effect that is sinificantly more than "keeping you regular ".

cellulose is plain fibre, plant material in fact. our appendix used to digest this when our diet was mostly plant material. we evolved and therefore the appendix is no longer needed, which is why we can live without it! often, food gets stuck in the dead-end of the appendix and decomposes, this is what causes some cases of appendicitis.
