As a seller of AUTHENTIC designer wear including handbags ON EBAY (yes, I sell AUTHENTIC items on EBAY! There are some of us on there)....I can tell you that there are less fakes than there used to be. Ebay are really clamping down on counterfeit items (although there are still some that slip through the net).

Tips for checking for authenticity:

1) Always check the full description of the item....some sellers will put the name of the designer in the header then state that it's a 'lookalike' later in the description.

Ebay are booting off items that say things like....'similar to Chloe paddington'......'Chloe style bag'....etc etc.....however there are still fake paddington bags on there....so watch out!

2) If a bag is £100 and it's a brand new £900 bag...then think about why someone would sell it at such a reduced price. It's usually either stolen (buying stolen goods is as bad as knowingly buying fakes...you're generally contributing to criminal activity somewhere along the line (drug rings / trafficking / fraud etc), or it's counterfeit.

3) If you're not completely sure about the item you're looking at.....ask for more photos and descriptions. Any seller worth their salt will offer this information without a second thought. I always state on my descriptions that people can contact me for more photos / larger & close up images / descriptions etc if they so wish. I also offer a '100% authentic' guarantee.

4) If the photo is a small blurred picture taken at fifty paces...walk fifty paces away from your pc! Granted, some people have cameras that do not have a macro lense and it can be tricky to get good photos...however if the price and photo seem too good to be true...it probably is.

5) Check their feedback. Check carefully though...even sellers with 100% positive can be selling fakes. I have seen feedback with all positives where people have written comments like...'Fantastic bag...not authentic but it's just what I wanted at that price!'....so read down the feedback list and see if you can find details like that. If there is negative feedback...check it out...even it is from 6 months ago and the picture has gone...if the feedback says ' sells fakes....do not trust!'....then whether it was a bag that was sold or a t-shirt...be WARY and be WARNED!

6) As I mentioned....there are honest sellers on Ebay...you just need to do some research and if you're only prepared to spend £20 on a designer bag, 9/10 times you can consider it fake. There are however some vintage bags that are for sale and it can be nice to own one just as much as a new one....but vintage doesn't guarantee authenticity either!

Check, check and check again. Ask questions...if they get shirty...go somewhere else (as if you're not happy with the item you're unlikely to get a refund from them). It could also be a sign that they are selling a fake.

You can get a bargain price bag....but do be careful and look at everything thoroughly.

Oh.....and reference caldwell9192 .... changing your ebay account name doesn't mean you're a crook! I've just changed mine to match my shop (originally started selling from my wardrobe under my name...now sell a combination of new, pre-owned and vintage designer and high street items)....so check the feedback as stated before....

I have to disagree with those who've said there aren't many authentic handbags on Ebay. There are LOTS and LOTS...I've bought and sold many myself. You HAVE to do your research and you HAVE to know what you're looking at. The more you do, the lower your chance of getting ripped off. Even then, there's still a risk - but the smarter you are about the brand you are buying, the better your chances are of purchasing an authentic item.

Treat it as you would ANY large purchase. I can't say "research, research, research" enough! This is the most important part....learn the features of an authentic bag, the average cost (or what it went for when it did retail if it's an item no longer carried by the designer) and the telling features of fakes.

Authentic = good....fake = bad! And, it's even worse if you knowingly buy a fake just for the label. Trust me, there are many of us out there who do know and I have to laugh at some of the horrible fakes being carried around on someone's arm who's all proud of it. Lame. I can't afford a lot of expensive bags all the time, so I carry what I CAN afford and not some lame version wanna-be bag sporting a fake label.

I have purchased some that have been real and some that are fake. Ebay and the brands (Mulberry,Marc Jacobs. etc... ) have employees that are hired just to scan auctions to make sure no one is trying to sell fake bags as real bags. I had a friend try to sell a jacket on ebay and the manufacture contacted ebay and told them it was a fake, (she bought if off ebay originally) they booted the item off and would not let her sell it. Make sure to read feedback of seller and don't buy from new seller or someone who has recently change ebay names. Positive feedback only. Hope this helps.

If its too good to be true price wise then it usually is....try buying from a buyer that offers a good refund policy and do what i do...buy it from them, cross check the numbers and authenticity cards etc with the actually designer (nip into selfridges they are usually quite helpful!)...and if it turns out it is, then send it back!

I got a fab baby pink chloe bag for £100 (it was a gift from an exboyfriend and the woman wanted to get rid very quickly!) and it is genuine and is goooorgeous!
I also have a fendi bag thats a complete fake (£55), but when compared with my friend who paid £800 for hers the only difference is a slight colour difference and the inside lining is slightly better quality than mine!

I've bought lots of designer bags off ebay and 90% of them have been genuine!

Just buy wisely and once you get it if its naff send it back!

They're are definately quality genuine bags on there, and some aren't necessairly genuine but just as good as!

I personally wouldnt buy a bag off of ebay if I was bothered if it was real or not . Best thing to do is find a bag you like alot and bid for it and pay a price youre happy with and then if its fake then say la vie . I personally have loads of bags and each and every one is fake . I dont mind because the most I ever paid for one is £50 and believe me you could never tell that any of my bags are fake . I took one to gucci in london and they could even tell and they sell them all day . X Hope that helps Happy bag shopping though X

If the price is too low you know its a fake. A real one will not sell for 50 dollars. Ebay tries to remove any knock off designer bag listings but some slip through and end before they find them.

I got ripped on a Burberry purse and hat. Just be careful and go to the authentic website to see what a real one looks like and go from there. I bought one that had the picture of a real purse then the one I was sent was not the same one. I can forget about getting my money back. Just be cautious.
